Why water movement matters

Common drainage solutions
Grading reshapes soil so surface water moves away from structures. Downspout extensions carry roof runoff beyond the immediate foundation area. Buried drainage lines can transport downspout water to an appropriate outlet. French drains collect subsurface water through perforated pipe in washed stone, while surface drains and swales intercept runoff moving across the yard.
The correct approach depends on where the water comes from, soil conditions, elevations, utilities, neighboring properties, and whether a reliable gravity outlet exists. Pumps may be needed where gravity drainage is not possible.
Why drainage should be designed as a system
Installing a drain without understanding elevations can move water to another problem area or create a pipe that never empties. A good assessment follows the water from roof to gutter, downspout, soil surface, collection point, pipe, and final discharge. It also accounts for cleanouts and future maintenance.
