Gutter Guide

Why Gutters Are More Important Than Most Oklahoma Homeowners Realize

A gutter system does more than catch rain. It controls where roof runoff lands, helping protect fascia, siding, landscaping, walkways, and soil around the foundation.

What gutters protect

Every roof collects a large volume of water during a heavy Oklahoma thunderstorm. Without controlled drainage, that runoff can erode soil, splash siding, stain masonry, saturate planting beds, wash out mulch, create icy walkways, and repeatedly wet areas beside the foundation.

Gutters also help protect roof edges when they are mounted correctly. Overflowing or poorly pitched systems can soak fascia, damage soffit materials, and contribute to wood decay.

Why sizing and downspouts matter

The appropriate gutter profile depends on roof area, pitch, valley concentration, and local rainfall intensity. Larger 6-inch systems can carry more water than standard 5-inch gutters and may be useful on larger or steeper roof sections. Capacity is only helpful when downspouts are correctly placed and sized.

Downspouts must discharge to a safe location. Dumping water at the corner of the foundation simply moves the problem from the roof edge to the soil. Extensions, splash blocks, or connected drainage lines may be needed depending on grade and outlet conditions.

Signs your gutter system needs attention

  • Water spills over the front or behind the gutter.
  • Sections sag, pull away, or hold standing water.
  • Seams or end caps leak repeatedly.
  • Fascia shows peeling paint, staining, or decay.
  • Soil erosion or puddles develop beneath downspouts.
  • Gutters are dented, punctured, or distorted after hail and wind.

Repair, clean, or replace?

Cleaning and minor resealing may solve isolated maintenance problems. Replacement is often more practical when the system is undersized, poorly pitched, extensively damaged, repeatedly leaking, or mounted to deteriorated fascia. Seamless gutters reduce joints along each run, though corners and outlets still require proper fabrication and sealing.

Think beyond the gutter. The best system connects roof runoff to a complete water-management plan that includes downspout discharge, grading, and drainage.
