What to do immediately after a storm
Start from the ground. Look for missing or lifted shingles, bent metal, damaged vents, pieces of roofing in the yard, dented gutters, and new water stains indoors. Do not climb onto a wet, steep, or visibly damaged roof. Roofing surfaces can be unstable even when the damage looks minor from below.
If water is entering the building, move belongings away from the affected area and place a container beneath active drips. Emergency tarping may reduce additional damage until a permanent repair is possible. Photograph visible conditions before cleanup when it is safe to do so.
Signs of hail and wind damage
Hail damage does not always create an immediate leak. On asphalt shingles it can loosen protective granules, bruise the mat, or expose asphalt that deteriorates faster under ultraviolet light. Wind can crease shingles, break seals, pull fasteners, and open vulnerable areas around ridges, eaves, flashing, and penetrations.
- On the roof: missing tabs, creases, exposed underlayment, fractured shingles, or displaced ridge caps.
- Around the exterior: dents in soft metal, torn screens, damaged siding, or fresh debris at downspouts.
- Inside: ceiling stains, damp insulation, musty odors, bubbling paint, or water near chimneys and vents.
Why an inspection should come before a repair decision
A complete inspection should evaluate shingles or panels, flashing, valleys, roof-to-wall transitions, pipe boots, ventilation components, decking indicators, gutters, and related exterior damage. The contractor should explain findings with photographs and a written scope rather than relying on pressure or fear.
If insurance may be involved, review your policy and contact your carrier promptly. Oklahoma Exteriors can document construction conditions and provide a repair or replacement estimate, but coverage decisions belong to the insurer. A contractor is not a public adjuster and should not promise that a claim will be approved.
Choosing a storm restoration contractor
Verify current registration, liability coverage, workers’ compensation, local contact information, written warranties, and a detailed scope. Ask who supervises the work, how landscaping is protected, what happens if hidden decking damage is found, and how cleanup is handled. Avoid signing incomplete agreements or paying the full project amount before work begins.
