Insurance Claim Guide

How to File a Roofing Insurance Claim in Oklahoma

A roofing claim is easier to manage when you protect the property, document the condition, understand the carrier’s process, and select a contractor based on qualifications rather than promises.

1. Protect people and prevent additional damage

Stay away from downed power lines, unstable trees, and damaged roof areas. If water is entering, move valuables and arrange reasonable temporary protection such as tarping. Keep receipts and photograph the condition before and after emergency work. Most policies require the owner to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage.

2. Document what happened

Record the storm date if known, photograph visible roof and exterior damage from safe locations, and note interior stains or active leaks. Save relevant weather alerts, invoices, and communications. Do not discard damaged materials until the carrier confirms what documentation is needed.

3. Review the policy and contact the insurer

Look for the deductible, coverage type, exclusions, reporting duties, and any deadlines. Replacement cost value and actual cash value are handled differently. Ask the carrier to explain the claim number, assigned adjuster, inspection process, and documents they require.

4. Obtain a professional roof assessment

A roofing contractor can inspect construction conditions, photograph damage, identify code-related scope items, and prepare an estimate. The contractor can answer roofing questions during the adjuster inspection when scheduling allows. Coverage interpretation, claim negotiation, and settlement decisions remain between you and the insurer unless you hire an appropriately licensed professional for those services.

5. Compare the carrier scope with the actual project

Review quantities, roofing components, flashing, ventilation, gutters, siding, and other affected items. Differences do not automatically mean either estimate is wrong; measurements, observed damage, code requirements, and estimating assumptions can differ. Provide supporting photos and contractor documentation to the carrier for review.

6. Choose the contractor carefully

Verify registration and insurance, insist on a written contract, understand payment timing, and ask how supplements or scope changes are handled. Never let someone invent damage, waive obligations improperly, or pressure you to sign before you understand the agreement.
